On Saturday, Feb 1, 2025, our robotics team, Team Warrior, competed for the first time in a regional robotics competition hosted by the 8th Brigade JROTC headquarters and executed by the JROTC cadre in San Diego. Our team placed 3rd out of 24 teams and won the Best Robot Design award. Team Warrior went to the competition with 5 members: Tyler Hansen - lead programmer and drive team coach, Nicolas Chestnut - hardware/builder, Arav Gupta - drive team scouter and notebook, Pratheek Ganta - notebook lead, and Cohen Lu - team captain and robot driver.
Every year, there is a new game for vex robotics. This year, it was to score donuts of the same color onto “stakes”. For the first 15 seconds of the match, the robot moves on its own without any human input. Whichever side gains the most points during this time, gets a bonus to their score. After this period, there is a minute and 45 seconds of driver control where the drivers would control the robot to move these mobile stakes to positive or negative corners which would add or subtract points on that mobile stake based on the color of the donut that is on the stake. During the last 30 seconds of this driver control period, robots can drive to the center of the field and extend to climb the ladder one step at a time.
The robotics competition itself consisted of qualification matches and elimination matches. In qualification matches, you are ranked based on how many wins you have and how many win points your robot scores during the matches. The higher you rank in qualification matches, the more priority you have on alliance selection as the matches are two teams vs two teams. When all the alliances are selected, they are put into a round-robin system for the elimination matches. Our team sadly lost at the quarter finals when our robot got stuck.
Team Warrior had an amazing day of fun and met many other JROTC Cadets from other states and cities.
ANA is exploring a potential partnership with IXL, a dynamic learning platform offering a comprehensive program with unlimited practice in math, language arts, science, social studies, and Spanish. This program covers thousands of skills, all aligned with the Common Core standards. IXL is designed to help your Cadet progress at his own pace, ensuring he receives personalized learning experiences. The adaptive nature of the program means that it will adjust based on demonstrated understanding, providing the right level of challenge and support to learn.
This partnership with IXL will be a valuable resource in helping Cadets strengthen their skills, build confidence, and achieve mastery in various subjects. By using IXL, Cadets can work through concepts at a pace that suits them, reinforcing what they learn in the classroom and addressing any gaps. Additionally, IXL's ability to cater to diverse learning styles aligns with the Gurian model, which emphasizes differentiated instruction based on individual learning needs and strengths. By integrating IXL into our curriculum, we are supporting the unique cognitive and developmental patterns of each Cadet.
This semester, ANA welcomed a new math faculty member, Kevin Roberson, who took over the AP Physics course from Ms. Mitchell. Kevin is a graduate of the University of Washington and taught math for three years in the greater Seattle area. He also holds teaching certifications in Social Science and general science. In his spare time, he designs card games and launches them on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. You can drop by the Critical Game Theory club to play one of them! He also rides an electric unicycle to work and would love to talk about it if you asked him. Welcome Mr. Roberson to the Warrior family!
The Counseling Team has been actively engaging with the Junior Class to guide them through the college admissions process and ensure they are well-prepared for senior year. Through targeted discussions, students gain valuable insights into SAT preparation, personal statements, college list building, and application essentials. These sessions provide a structured approach to navigating the complexities of college admissions while encouraging students to reflect on their goals and aspirations. By starting early, these Cadets can enter senior year with a strong foundation and a clear plan for their future.
